Republic Cement Corporation, a Lafarge-associated company was recognized as the Most Outstanding Waste Management Practitioner during the 2011 Sustainable Development Awards organized by the Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI).

FPI, an organization committed to promoting globally competitive and socially responsible industries, lauded RCC's efforts in installing a Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system at its Teresa plant. The WHR system captures and utilizes most of the plant's waste heat to generate electricity and currently provides 30% of the plant's electricity requirements, effectively reducing its carbon footprint on the environment.

Another Lafarge-WWF Partnership

More than 50 top students from nine colleges in Metro Manila got a glimpse of how it is to be a sustainable engineer and architect as they participated in an environmental workshop organized by WWF Philippines and LAFARGE Cement Services Philippines, Inc. last September.

In the whole day workshop called "Building Blocks", senior engineering and architecture students were able to practice some practical and long-term solutions to promote climate change preparedness and sustainable construction, including learning how to compute the carbon footprint and preparing plans to share what they have learned to their fellow students and to their communities.

A First in the Philippine Cement Industry

The project to recover heat and turn this into electricity, set up by Republic Cement Corporation (Teresa Plant), a Lafarge associated company in the Philippines, has now been officially registered as a "Clean Development Mechanism" (CDM) by the CDM executive board in Bonn, Germany.

The CDM is one of the flexibility mechanisms introduced by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the context of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. The process is designed to provide a financial incentive for projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries.

The Lafarge Research Center near Lyon in France is the largest building materials laboratory in the world. Its activities are complemented by local teams in a network of technical centers around the globe.
